Sophora microphylla (South Island Kowhai, small-leaved Kowhai)

NZ Native.  Divaricating juvenile habit. Fine young branches are yellow and have a wonderful zigzagging habit.  As the tree matures the branches stretch and thicken.  Bright yellow flowers in spring attract native birds. 

Full sun or semi-shade.  Prefer free draining soil.  Can tolerate moisture in a cooler climate.  Hardy to coastal, frost and dry.
